New electronic switch now features IO-Link for intelligent automation

24-06-2025 | Schurter | Industrial

SCHURTER has expanded its electronic switch portfolio with the MSS-IO, a rugged, wear-free switch featuring an IO-Link interface. Created for the demands of modern industrial automation, the switch enables full bidirectional communication and real-time diagnostics in a compact, maintenance-free package.

Engineering-centric design: Solid-state precision

At the core of the device is the company's proven solid-state switch technology – eschewing mechanical and capacitive components in favour of highly sensitive resistance-based detection. This design enables precise signal acquisition, even under low actuation forces, while providing the robustness necessary for continuous operation in automated production lines and robotics.

By eradicating moving parts, the switch is inherently more reliable, with greatly extended service life and lowered risk of mechanical failure – an excellent fit for engineers focused on uptime and system stability.

IO-Link integration: Smarter control at the edge

The integrated IO-Link interface transforms the switch from a simple actuator into an intelligent node within the control architecture. Through standard M12 connections, engineers gain access to:

  • Real-time status and diagnostics
  • On-the-fly parameterisation
  • Predictive maintenance data

This supports seamless integration into Industry 4.0 and IIoT infrastructures, allowing tighter control loops, faster commissioning, and simplified device management.

Designed for harsh and hygienic environments

The switch features a sealed, seamless surface that is immune to moisture, dust, and aggressive cleaning agents – making it ideal for food-grade or cleanroom applications. The IP-rated construction ensures continued performance in challenging environments where conventional switches degrade quickly.

Target applications

Engineered for high-reliability industrial contexts, the MSS-IO excels in:

  • Automated manufacturing and packaging lines
  • Collaborative and industrial robotics
  • Hygiene-sensitive installations such as food processing and biotech labs
  • Environments requiring strict digital communication protocols and real-time feedback
