New single pair Ethernet for automotive connections

18-02-2021 | ODU Connectors | Automotive & Transport

The ODU MINI-SNAP for single pair Ethernet (SPE) allows Ethernet connections by copper cables with a single twisted wire pair while providing for the voltage supply of terminal devices via PoDL. This simpler design of new generation of connectors and the associated weight and space decrease are beneficial for designers and developers in many areas.

The SPE standards and use are 1000BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bp), 1000BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bw), and 0BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3cq).

The maximum bridgeable distances of the standards fluctuate between 15.4m and 1,000m. SPE is currently being launched in new automotive generations, succeeding CAN and other bus systems. In the future, communication, controls and security functions will be maintained uniformly via Ethernet. The field of industrial automation is also interested in benefiting from this. Here, SPE provides the barrier-free connection of devices, sensor and actuator technology and a great deal more.
