Flex Power Modules launched its PKM7200W series of DC-DC converters with an ultra-wide input range of 16-160V (185V/1 sec), ideal for worldwide rail applications. In a case size of just 62mm x 40mm x 13mm (2.44" x 1.57" x 0.51"), the products provide 150W continuous output power and 12V, 24V or 54VDC fully regulated single outputs. The parts attain up to 89% efficiency and feature 4kVDC isolation, fulfilling the requirements of EN 50155 for rail and IEC/EN/UL 62368-1 for IT and audio/visual applications.

The series has the novel feature of a VBUS pin, an input-referenced connection that is boosted to around 100V, irrespective of the input voltage. This can charge a user-supplied capacitor, which the DC-DC switches in when the input power is interrupted. The feature allows long hold-up time with a relatively small capacitor to meet the 10-30ms requirements of EN 50155.

The products are compliant with the rail fire safety standard EN 45545-2 and have been qualified to EN 61373 and the IEC 60068 series of standards for environmental testing. EN 50121-3-2 for EMC in rail applications is met, and EN 55011 and the EN 61000-4 series of standards for EM immunity. EMI conducted emissions meet EN 55032, CISPR 32 and FCC part 15J' Class B' with an external filter.

The series operates from -40C to +100C baseplate temperature with derating, depending on the attached heatsink and airflow. Typically, the parts provide a full load with a 20mm attached quarter-brick heatsink up to 60C ambient air temperature in natural convection and around 90C with 3m/s airflow.

The series is fully featured, with a programmable input under-voltage lockout, remote control, output trim and remote sensing. Comprehensive protection includes over-temperature and output short-circuit, over-voltage and over-current.
