Synchronous buck converter supports high-efficiency operation and reduces EMI

Diodes Incorporated has released a new addition to its automotive-compliant DC-DC converters family. The DIODES AP64060Q is a 600mA synchronous buck converter device with an input voltage range that covers 4.5V to 40V. It includes a 600mOhm high-side power MOSFET plus a 300mOhm low-side power MOSFET so that high-efficiency step-down conversion (reaching 90%) can be provided with minimal PCB board space. The device is aimed at automotive powertrains, infotainment systems, instrumentation clusters, and vehicles’ exterior lighting.

It has a very low IQ, generally only 90μA, which translates into enhanced light load efficiency. Due to the fast-switching frequencies this device supports (2MHz), smaller accompanying inductors and capacitors can be chosen. Its synchronous rectification removes the necessity for an external Schottky diode while using a peak current mode control and built-in loop compensation network further lowers the overall component count.

The proprietary gate driver scheme used in the device eases switching node ringing without impacting on MOSFET turn-on and turn-off times. This mitigates high frequency radiated EMI noise created by MOSFET switching.

The device has an operating ambient temperature range of -40C to +125C. Protection features include OVP, UVLO, and thermal shutdown. This device is provided in a compact TSOT26 package.
