With the new PAN1780 Panasonic Industry Europe has released a new Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy module based on the Nordic nRF52840 SoC single-chip controller. With an output power of up to +8dBm and the high sensitivity of the nRF52840 together with the LE coded PHY makes the module particularly attractive for applications that need a long range. The Bluetooth 5.0 features facilitate a higher symbol rate of 2Mbps employing the high-speed LE 2M PHY. Moreover, the new LE advertising extensions provide for much greater amounts of data to be broadcast in connectionless scenarios. As well as BLE5.0 with the qualified Bluetooth mesh profile stack it supports 802.15.4 and NFC-A. With its Cortex M4F processor, 256kB RAM and the built-in 1MB flash memory it can simply be utilised in standalone mode, thereby removing the requirement for an external processor, saving complexity, space and cost. The PAN1780AT, a variant with additional AT Command Set is also available.

At only 15.6mm x 8.7mm x 2mm, the compact module provides an ARM TrustZone Cryptocell 310 security core that supports a secure boot process. Furthermore, a temperature sensor is integrated into the module. The operating temperature range is -40C up to 85C, and the supply voltage ranges from 1.7V up to 5.5V.

Particularly IIoT applications such as devices for smart city infrastructure, industrial mesh networks or robotics within Industry 4.0 environments will benefit from the extensive features of the module. Also, smart health and secure medical peripherals or building automation applications like smart locks or intelligent lighting are ideal areas of use. Due to the high performance and the built-in Cryptocell of the Bluetooth module, it is also an excellent solution for edge computing purposes.
