Highly integrated PMIC for small battery products

The Nordic Semiconductor nPM1304 has expanded Rutronik's PMIC portfolio. By integrating essential functions needed for embedded designs into a compact package, this PMIC enables longer runtimes and efficient battery charging with fewer components, thereby simplifying system design. The PMIC builds on Nordic's award-winning PMIC nPM1300 and is a highly integrated solution that delivers extremely low power consumption and accurate fuel level measurement. Applications include smart rings or glasses, and body sensors, and other small battery applications that support charging currents up to 4mA.

Optimised for maximum efficiency and compact size, the device is configurable via an I2C-compatible two-wire interface (TWI). This interface delivers easy access and configuration of a range of advanced system management features, including integrated hard reset functionality for one or two buttons, an accurate battery fuel gauge, a system-level watchdog, a power failure warning, and recovery after a failed boot.

These features are typically implemented as discrete components in embedded designs, but the nPM1304 integrates them into a single, compact package, simplifying system design - reducing the number of components required. The accompanying nPM1304-EK evaluation kit further supports developers in implementing their designs. The nPM1304 manages power for Nordic's nRF52, nRF53, and nRF54 series of wireless SoCs) and other MCUs, offering extremely low power consumption.

The device offers the following:

  • Highly efficient PMIC with integrated system management functions
  • Supports model-based precision fuel gauge running on the host
  • Watchdog and boot timer
  • Power failure warning
  • Hard reset with one or two buttons
  • 4-100mA battery charger
  • Supports Li-ion, Li-polymer and LiFePO4 batteries
  • Four individually controllable power rails
  • Two highly efficient buck regulators with 200mA current limit
  • Two 100mA load switches or 50mA LDOs
  • Input regulator with USB support
  • USB-C compatible
  • Ship and hibernate mode
  • Five GPIOs and three LED drivers
  • Operating temperature from -40C to 85C

Typical application examples include smart rings, smart glasses, health and fitness sensors and monitoring devices, intelligent/low-energy sensors, and fitness trackers.
