RETs facilitate high-power load switching in space-constrained applications

Nexperia offers a new series of 500mA dual RETs in ultra-compact DFN2020(D)-6 packaging. These devices have been created for load switching in wearables and smartphones and use in digital circuits with higher power requirements, such as space-constrained computing, communications, and industrial and automotive applications. Notably, the RET in DFN configuration accomplishes dual space-saving feats. First, it offers substantial board space savings by ingeniously integrating the BJT and resistor into a singular package. Moreover, the leadless DFN packaging itself contributes to spatial economy. This strategic confluence of integration and packaging underscores the company's dedication to fulfilling the compact spatial requisites that define contemporary electronic devices.

The 12 new RETs combine dual BJTs with bias resistors integrated in the same package to lower component count and simplify board design. They also incorporate a second integrated resistor parallel to the base-emitter path to create a voltage divider that sets the base voltage. This delivers finer tuning and better turn-off characteristic behaviour. Since these internal resistors have higher tolerances than external resistors, RETs are suited for switching applications where transistors operate in an on- or off-state, helping to overcome the temperature dependence of standard BJTs. They also assist in reducing the costs associated with pick and place and manual handling.

RET devices in this series are obtainable in dual NPN/NPN, NPN/PNP and PNP/PNP options. Unlike similar competing devices, the RETs fully deliver their specified 500mA output current from a tiny DFN2020(D)-6 package measuring only 2mm x 2mm x 0.65mm. This packaging is specialised for excellent thermal performance in high-power applications, delivering up to 1W total output power from collector-emitter voltages (VCEO, open base) up to 50V.

The company's RET devices are offered as standard and automotive (AEC-Q101 qualified) parts. The portfolio comprises over 400 products, including single and dual RETs with various resistor combinations. Available in DFN and leaded SMD packages, the company provides the optimal match for many applications.
