Series switching regulators offer further improvement

05-09-2023 | RECOM Power | Power

RECOM's R-78 series of switching regulators is a drop-in replacement for lossy linear types and is now available with an extended input voltage range to 40V and a wider operating ambient temperature to +100C.

The new, cost-effective R-78CK-0.5 series offers 3.3V, 5V, 12V, or 15V outputs, all rated at 0.5A with conversion efficiencies up to 96%. Low losses mean heatsinking is unnecessary, saving material and assembly labour costs while freeing up substantial board space. Depending on the variant, no or minimal derating is needed up to +100C ambient with the parts operating at their minimum input voltages. The full 0.5A output can be drawn up to a minimum of +65C at higher input voltages, depending on the variant.

Full input under-voltage, short-circuit, and thermal protection is supplied, and the parts are certified to IEC/EN 62368-1 3rd edition.

Other improvements on the existing R-78E series comprise a lower allowable input-output differential voltage for the 3.3V and 5V output parts, lower quiescent current, and smaller package size in each dimension while maintaining the standard pinout.

Unlike linear regulators, the parts may be configured to generate a negative output from a positive input. The series is supplied in a compact package measuring 11.5mm (l) x 7.55mm (w) x 10.2mm (h).
