TDK Corporation has expanded its TMR angle sensor portfolio with the release of the TAS4240 TMR-based angle-sensor for automotive and industrial applications. The device is supplied in a compact TSSOP8 package and offers two redundant analog single-ended SIN/COS outputs. The sensor provides precise angle measurements in applications where high performance is required and space is limited.

As a 360-degree angle sensor, it is ideal for accurately measuring the rotor position of BLDC motors employed in safety critical applications, such as power steering, brake boosters, or traction motors. The sensor comprises four TMR half bridges and offers two separated SIN/COS outputs. Higher safety levels up to ASIL D can then be fulfilled for the system while providing higher availability of position information even in case of a failure of one of the output signals. Depending on system architectures, the sensor may also support fail-operational concepts.

Its state-of-the-art TMR technology profits from its long-term expertise in magnetic-sensor technology. It optimises its sensors by successfully incorporating sophisticated TMR technology into small packages. The angle accuracy of the sensor stays stable at different temperatures and over the sensor’s lifetime. The deterministic behaviour of the device in extended magnetic-field ranges unlocks new application possibilities, even in demanding conditions.

Typical application areas include BLDC and PMSM commutation in a safety-relevant environment such as electronic power steering, brake booster, etc.; and linear position sensing using an array of the sensors in industrial servo motors, automation, encoders, robotics.
