Affordable can kit allows designers to rapidly construct PCB cans

Shield Can EMC protection screening products from Harwin are available in kit form, allowing designers to rapidly construct PCB cans at small cost for development purposes. They are now available from TTI Europe.

The company’s Shield Cans are simply pressed onto pre-positioned surface mount Shield Clips creating an EMC cage around sensitive ICs and electronic circuitry. This helps save expensive, labour-intensive secondary assembly and facilitates rework. A variety of standard Can and Clips sizes are available. However, through development and test, typically engineers have had to order bespoke cans without being 100% certain of their eventual requirements, incurring costs and producing delays. Now, a can may be constructed easily and effectively in minutes, with no special tools or experience required.

The low-cost kit includes two 80mm x 60mm x 0.3mm thick Nickel Silver sheets that are pre-scribed with a 5mm grid. This enables easy cutting and forming, allowing the user to create a shield can of the needed dimensions. Auto-placeable Shield Can Clips are also included, to hold the cans securely in position on the PCB.

Typical applications include consumer electronics, industrial, instrumentation, and control systems.
