Arrow Electronics has unveiled an exclusive system on module (SoM) that helps engineers exploit the new ARM-powered Freescale QorIQ LS1021A communication processor, together with two associated carrier boards that give a choice of platforms for application development. Arrow developed the ECUcore-1021 SoM and boards together with Freescale and automation technology systems specialist SYS TEC electronic GmbH. The SoM featuring the sub-3W QorIQ LS1021A processor, with ECC protected L1 and L2 cache memory, and can be used directly in equipment such as IoT gateways, automation, wireless routers and smart energy devices to simplify development and accelerate time to market. The QorIQ LS1021A processor is covered by the Freescale 15-year Longevity Program and embodies the new Layerscape architecture, which now supports both ARM as well as Power Architecture technology. The ECUcore-1021 Development Board provides Gigabit Ethernet and RS232 serial connectivity, two CAN interfaces and a SD-Card that can be loaded with the user’s desired boot image. Headers are provided for connecting the SoM, while SPI and interrupt signals available on a patch field allow developers to connect additional custom circuitry as needed. The Development Board is supplied as part of the ECUcore-1021 Development Kit, which also includes the SoM, a DVD containing a VMware Image and cross-toolchain with Eclipse-based IDE, an FTP patch cable, and documentation. The ECUcore-1021 Application Board is a larger board that provides extra functionality including USB3.0, SATA3.0, PCI-Express, LVDS and DVI interfaces, as well as peripherals including an ambient-light sensor, temperature sensor, touch-screen controller, scroll wheel, beeper and a dedicated audio channel. In addition, industrial-grade power-supply circuitry including power-fail detection saves significant effort for designers creating their own devices based on the ECUcore-1021 SoM. The SoM and boards are in stock and available now, says the company.
