OMNIVISION has launched the new OV50R CMOS image sensor, which features an ultra-high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 110dB for video and preview with single exposure, excellent low-light performance, fast autofocus, and high frame rates. The OV50R, a 50MP sensor with a 1.2µm pixel, is designed for high-end consumer devices including smartphones, as well as action, vlog and pocket cameras.
"OMNIVISION introduced a TheiaCel sensor to the mobile market, the OV50X, for flagship smartphones in April 2025. With the launch of the OV50R, we are further expanding the TheiaCel product family, offering our patented technology to a broader range of smartphones," said Keneki Kure, mobile product marketing director, OMNIVISION. "Our OV50R is the industry's leading image sensor designed for high-end main cameras in a 1/1.3-inch optical format that offers 4K three-channel HDR and a high frame rate at 60fps. Compared with the previous-generation 1.2µm pixel TheiaCel sensor, OV50K, the new mobile TheiaCel sensor OV50R delivers approximately 20% lower power consumption, enabling longer HDR video capture while maintaining system stability. With the OV50R, a broader range of smartphones and action cameras are capable of superior video and photo capture around the clock, even in challenging lighting conditions."
The OV50R supports four-cell binning for 12.5MP at 120fps and 4K 60fps with three-channel HDR with 4x sensitivity for excellent low-light performance. It offers premium-quality 8K video with dual analogue gain (DAG), HDR, and on-sensor crop zoom. The company's second-generation TheiaCel technology further expands single exposure HDR to 110dB. The sensor supports 100% coverage quad phase detection (QPD) for best-in-class autofocus performance.
