Aluminium capacitors offer high capacitance in smaller case sizes

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc offers a new series of screw-terminal aluminium electrolytic capacitors that enable designers to pack more energy storage into less space. Offered in 11 case sizes varying from 35mm x 60mm to 90mm x 220mm, the Vishay BCcomponents 202 PML-ST series provides high capacitance/voltage (CV) values in smaller case sizes than past-generation solutions while supplying increased ripple current to 49.6A, lower ESR down to 2mOhm, and a long useful life of 10 000h at +85C.

Providing a cylindrical aluminium case insulated with a blue sleeve and pressure relief in their sealing disc, the electrolytic capacitors supply high CV combinations from 56000µF at 200V to 15000µF at 450V. For example, a CV rating of 2200µF/400V – previously available in the 65mm x 105mm case size – is now offered in the smaller 50mm x 105mm case size. For CV ratings with a similar case size to previous-generation solutions, the capacitors supply improved ripple current and ESR. For example, a CV rating of 4700µF/400V offers 12% higher ripple current and 16% lower ESR.

As polarised aluminium electrolytic capacitors with a non-solid electrolyte, the RoHS-compliant devices are ideal for filtering, buffering, and energy storage in pulsed power applications with a required lifetime of 10 to 15 years.

Typical end products incorporate industrial motor drives; rail traction for trains and subways; welding equipment, HVAC, and UPS; wind turbines and solar power inverters; and medical X-ray equipment.
