Low voltage buck converter for high power density automotive designs

Diodes Incorporated has launched the automotive-compliant DIODES AP61300Q and DIODES AP61302Q synchronous buck converters. These 3A-rated devices offer a wide input voltage range of 2.4V to 5.5V and satisfy the demand for automotive POLs that are more streamlined and display increased efficiency levels. They are optimised for use in vehicle telematics, ADAS, power and infotainment systems, and instrumentation clusters.

Included in each of these buck converters is a 70mOhm high-side power MOSFET and a 50mOhm low-side power MOSFET, which together provide high-efficiency step-down DC-DC conversion. With fast switching speeds supported, far smaller accompanying passives can be selected, reducing the overall BOM and saving space.

Depending on the load conditions, the devices can be configured to PFM or PWM operating modes (using the enable pin). Their quiescent current (IQ) of 19μA, when in PFM mode, allows them to sustain elevated efficiencies even in light load situations. Moreover, their LDO mode allows output voltage regulation to be maintained when the input voltage comes close to the VOUT voltage.

Due to the COT control functionality that the devices both feature, easy loop stabilisation, rapid transient response, and low output voltage ripple are all achieved, with only minimal external components needed. Consequently, much less PCB area needs to be allocated, and overall production costs are decreased.
