Analog Devices ADF5709 Wideband MMIC VCO supports an output frequency range of 9.85GHz to 20.5GHz while maintaining -83dBc/Hz phase noise at 100kHz offset without subharmonic tones. The wide frequency range and low phase noise of this device enable PLL solutions for a mixture of frequency bands and limits the requirement for multiple narrow-band VCOs. The wide frequency coverage decreases the board design complexity and simplifies the BOM when designing RF and microwave applications.

The device functions from a single 5V supply and uses only 70mA of supply current, resulting in minimum power dissipation. The low power consumption of this device makes it excellent for high-performance applications with limited or no airflow. The monolithic construction of the VCO enables optimal output power and noise characteristics over temperature variations.

The device is fully integrated and includes a resonator, a negative resistance device, and a varactor diode, reducing the number of needed external components and decreasing board space.

The VCO is encapsulated into a small, 3.9mm x 3.9mm, RoHS compliant, ceramic LCC package. The package includes through vias to the exposed pad, enhancing the device's thermal characteristics.

Typical applications include industrial and medical equipment, test and measurement equipment, defence radars, and ECMs, point to point and multipoint radios, VSATs, and wireless communication infrastructure.
