New sensor modules offer long range presence and proximity sensing

Vishay Intertechnology has a new series of IR sensor modules in five compact package types. Highlighting a fast 300μs reaction time, the TSSP9xxx AGC 0 devices offer long-range presence and proximity sensing up to 2m, and a range up to 30m for light curtain and perimeter guard applications.

In comparison with previous-generation devices, the fixed-gain sensors offer higher interference strength without spurious signals and an output pulse width closer to the optical burst length. Also, they provide an almost constant detection threshold over their -25C to +85C temperature range and can detect a valid IR signal up to a higher DC illuminance level.

The modules are a good choice for fast proximity applications (~15ms) by using a burst pattern with variable intensity. The devices are excellent for sensing the distance to objects for drones, robots, toys, and vicinity switches. They can also be employed as reflective sensors for hand dryers, towel or soap dispensers, toilets, water faucets, vending machine fall detection, and security and pet gates. To simplify designs in these applications, The series devices offer a PIN photodiode and sensor IC in compact Minimold (TSSP930..), Mold (TSSP940..), Heimdall (TSSP950..), Panhead (TSSP960..), and Minicast (TSSP980..) packages.

The modules work at a supply voltage range from 2V to 3.6V, offer a low supply current of 0.8mA, and provide carrier frequencies of 38kHz and 56kHz. The sensors are created to receive IR pulses from an emitter with a peak wavelength of 940nm. The devices are insensitive to supply voltage and ripple noise and offer shielding against EMI, while an IR filter suppresses visible light. The series is RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green.
