Texas Instruments has introduced two new USB Type-C and USB PD controllers, with fully integrated power paths to simplify designs, reduce solution size and hasten time to market. The TPS65987D and TPS65988 provide system designers what is claimed to be the industry’s highest level of integration which can lessen design complexity and overall cost. The devices are claimed to be the first USB PD controllers to source 100W and 200W of power, respectively, to support computing applications and allow the benefits of USB Type-C in further applications including cordless power tools, gaming and virtual reality headsets. The TPS65987D is a single-port device intended to source 100W of power, integrates independent 20V, 5A source and sink load switches. Low RDS(on) (25mOhm) and reverse current protection in the device give a comprehensive solution for controlling a port’s charging needs. The dual-port TPS65988 can source 200W of power, and provides two integrated 5A bidirectional load switches and external power-path control to allow simultaneous 5A source capability. The devices are USB PD 3.0-certified, UL Recognized, and IEC safety-certified, and come preprogrammed to support many of the most common use cases including DisplayPort and Thunderbolt applications. Extra use cases are supported through an easy-to-use configuration tool.
