AVX has released a new series of cylindrical, electrochemical, double-layer supercapacitors. Rated for 2.7V and delivering high capacitance values (1F - 3,000F), low ESR (0.16mohm - 200mohm at 1,000KHz), low leakage (6µA - 5,800µA), high energy density (1.2 to 5.6Wh/kg), and long lifetime performance (50,000+ cycles), the new SCC Series supercapacitors exhibit excellent pulse power handling characteristics, and can be used alone or in conjunction with primary or secondary batteries to provide extended backup time, longer battery life, and instantaneous pulse power as needed. Available in a wide range of case sizes with diameters spanning 6.3mm to 60mm, case lengths spanning 12mm to 165mm, and either radial, solder pin, or cylindrical leads, the series introduces one of the industry's smallest 1F/2.7V supercapacitor to market, and offers ideal hold-up, energy harvesting, and pulse power solutions for industrial and consumer applications including UPS, wireless alarms, remote meters, GSM and GSR transmissions, and camera flash systems, scanners, toys, and games. "Our new SCC Series supercapacitors were especially designed to provide a wide range of industrial and consumer device engineers with supercapacitors that deliver optimal pulse power handling characteristics and significantly outperform the competition while remaining cost-competitive,” said Shawn Hansen, the worldwide business manager for specialty capacitors at AVX. The supercapacitors are rated for use in operating temperatures spanning -40C to +65C (or, with voltage de-rated to 2.3V per cell, -40C to +85C), are compatible with hand, reflow, and wave soldering so long as appropriate precautions are enacted, and are both lead-free compatible and RoHS compliance compatible. All parts in the series are tested and qualified for life cycle, high temperature load-life, temperature and humidity characteristics, and vibration resistance, and are shipped in bulk packaging. Current lead-time for the series is four to eight weeks.
