Wireless power transmitter has high efficiency with excellent thermal dissipation

Mouser now stocks the bq501210 wireless power transmitter from Texas Instruments. Claimed to be the industry's first Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) v1.2 Qi-certified 15W wireless power transmitter, the bq501210 enables 84 percent system efficiency with significantly less thermal dissipation than traditional wireless power devices. The transmitter supports multiple fast-charging protocols, operates with any Qi WPC v1.1 receiver, and offers an array of flexible and customisable features such as personal electronics, medical, and space-constrained industrial applications. The transmitter is an intelligent device that periodically pings the surrounding environment for available devices to be powered, detects if a foreign metal object is present on the charging pad, monitors all communication from the device being wirelessly powered, and adjusts power applied to the transmitter coil per feedback received from the powered device. It includes a 5V full-bridge power stage and manages the fault conditions associated with the power transfer and controls the operating mode status indicator. The device delivers up to 15W continuous power into a Qi-compliant type MP-A5 transmitter coil, is backward compatible with existing 5W WPC receivers, and uses a rail voltage control scheme instead of the traditional frequency control to adjust the amount of power delivered to the receiver. The transmitter is available in a 64-pin, 9mm × 9mm VQFN package, and is supported by the bq501210EVM-756 evaluation module, a high-performance, easy-to-use development module for designing wireless power solutions.
