Thick-film power resistor saves space and lowers costs in auto and industrial applications

Vishay has introduced a new AEC-Q200-qualified, 25W thick-film power resistor in a compact surface-mount TO-252 style (DPAK) package. For automotive, industrial and defence applications, the DTO25 saves space compared with previous-generation solutions while providing high power dissipation of at least 3W on the PCB and a wide range of resistance values. The DTO25 is non-inductive and provides a resistance range from 0.016ohm to 700kohm. Offering a compact 8.2mm by 7.3mm footprint with a low 2.8mm profile, the thick film resistor can support more than 10 times more energy than competing components in the DPAK package - up to 5kW+ for a 10-5 second pulse and 10 J for a 0.1 second pulse. The device provides long-term reliability for power supply, load resistor, snubber, power conversion, and pre-charging and discharging in battery management systems for hybrid and electric cars, missile control boards, and UPS. In these applications it allows designers to replace several chip resistors with one device to lower costs, simplify layouts, and reduce the size of their end products. Thermal resistance for the DTO25 at 25W and +25C is 5C/W junction-to-case. The resistor features a standard temperature coefficient of ± 150 ppm/°C with standard tolerances of ±1% to ±10%. Connections for the new resistor are tinned copper, and they are specified for operation over a -55C to +150C temperature range. The device is RoHS-compliant, offers a moisture sensitivity level of 1, and supports soldering temperatures at +270C for 10 seconds, says the company.
