Single power switch family restricts heavy capacitive loads and short circuits

02-08-2023 | Texas Instruments | Power

The Texas Instruments TPS20xxE power-distribution switch family targets applications, including USB, where heavy capacitive loads and short circuits can be encountered. This family provides fixed current-limit thresholds for applications needing 1.5A or 2A loading, with options between high or low enable polarisation in different packages.

The family of switches limits the output current to a safe level by working in a constant-current mode when the output load exceeds the current limit threshold. This supplies a predictable fault current under all conditions. The fast overload response time alleviates the burden on the 2.7V-5.5V supply to deliver regulated power when the output is shorted. The power-switch rise and fall times are controlled to minimise current surges throughout turn-on and turn-off.
