One-phase shunt electricity meter reference design uses standalone ADCs

30-07-2020 | Texas Instruments | Design & Manufacture

This Texas Instruments reference design implements Class 0.5 single-phase energy measurement utilising standalone multi-channel ADCs to sample a shunt current sensor. With the combination of the shunt sensor and compact magnetically immune power supply, the design offers protection against magnetic tampering attacks.

The design also affords the ability to detect potential tampering from neutral line disconnection. The combination of a high-performance ARM Cortex-M4 MCU to execute the metrology calculations and 8kHz sampling rate provides the addition of power quality functions, such as individual harmonic analysis.

The design provides calculated parameters including active and reactive energy and power, RMS line current, RMS neutral current, RMS voltage, power factor, and line frequency. RS-485 and RS-232 interfaces are provided with 5kV RMS isolation. The design is supplied complete with reference design,, hardware files and design guide.
