Compact intelligent power device reduces consumption of motor equipment

Toshiba Electronics has released a high voltage intelligent power device designed for driving the motor within equipment including air cleaners, air conditioners and pumps. With its rated power supply voltage (VBB) of 600V, the TPD4162F can be employed for any applications with input signals in the range 200VAC to 220VAC.

The new IC comprises a PWM circuit, three-phase decoder, level shifting high-side driver and low side driver with embedded IGBTs and FRDs. This enables direct drive of BLDC motors with square wave input signals from a Hall sensor or Hall IC with no requirement for a PWM controller IC.

Based upon a new process, the device provides decreased power dissipation of approximately 10% when compared to its predecessor (TPD4152F), decreasing the power dissipation of motor drivers.

Built into the device are multiple protection features including current limit, OCP, thermal shutdown and UVLO thereby decreasing the requirement for peripheral circuits. This, along with the small HSSOP31 surface-mount package with a 17.5mm x 11.9mm footprint and 2.2mm height, provides for compact designs including the capability to mount the driver circuitry directly to the motor.
