Advantech has announced the release of MIC-715-OX — an innovative, ruggedised edge AI system for applications in harsh environments. Based on the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX SOM, this solution features an IP67 rating for water and dust, lockable connectors for vibration tolerance, a machine ignition protection system, built-in PoE, and GMSL2 video interface support.

AI has displayed great potential in traffic, security, and manufacturing applications but has so far stayed in the early phases of its implementation within heavy industry. Heavy industries often entail costly 24/7 operations in harsh environments that can be dangerous to labourers. AI-enabled autonomous equipment presents an opportunity to improve this situation by augmenting these industries' efficiency, accuracy, and safety. Accordingly, this ruggedised edge AI system is created with these needs and in-vehicle AI applications in mind.

The system is powered by the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX module with AI performance of up to 100 TOPS. It leverages M12 connectors, supports operation in broad temperature ranges (-25C-60C; 77F-140F), and offers an IP67 rating. Similarly, all of its I/O are lockable, providing advanced vibration resistance. The system supports cameras via an integrated PoE port and will soon support up to 6 x GMSL2 cameras. This combination of features makes the system uniquely suited for applications in harsh environments.

The system uses a protective ignition mechanism for heavy industry vehicle use cases that lowers engine stalling and ensures system operation during circumstances with unstable input voltage. Likewise, users can manually adjust this solution's ignition time through connected machines. As a member of the MIC-AI series, it provides flexible I/O, diverse peripherals, excellent longevity, and BSP capabilities. MIC-715-OX can also support Wi-Fi, 4G/LTE, and 5G simultaneously.
