IDT - Network search engines accelerate packet processing
Published Apr 3 2006
To provide solutions aimed at the emerging advanced telecom computing
architecture (ATCA) platform, IDT (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.), a
leading provider of network search engines (NSEs), has partnered with
RadiSys.
As a leading supplier of advanced embedded systems used in commercial,
enterprise and service provider markets, RadiSys has developed a daughter
card featuring the IDT 75K72234 NSE with dual Network Processor Forum (NPF)
look-aside (LA-1) interfaces to accompany its Promentum ATCA-7010 10 Gbps
packet-processing module that users can use to significantly boost packet
processing performance with minimal design effort, says the company.
The combined solution can be used as a designer's evaluation platform or as
an off-the-shelf system, which can be deployed directly into an end design
in next-generation networking equipment delivering high packet processing
performance such as traffic aggregators, intrusion detection systems and
high-bandwidth line cards.
The RadiSys Promentum ATCA-7010 is a single slot ATCA module capable of
achieving up to 10Gbps throughput. The modular design of the solution
enables I/O and fabric interface flexibility. The PICMG 3.0- and PICMG
3.x-compliant module includes dual Intel IXP2800 network processor units
(NPUs) and a powerful memory architecture. The IDT 75K72234 NSE offloads
routing and classification lookups from the Intel NPUs, enabling the NPU to
have more headroom and thereby focus on providing differentiated services,
adding increased value to the end users. Its dual LA-1 interfaces allow the
NSE to be a shared resource between both Intel NPUs, providing design
flexibility, reduced board space, cost, and power consumption, as well as
improved performance for both ingress and egress packet processing.
Additionally, software support for the IDT NSE family has been fully
integrated with the Intel NPU software development tools to save customers
significant engineering resources and enable overall savings in development
and design time, says the company.
