Four-channel USB Type-C port protection solution

Halo Microelectronics has released its HL8261, a four-channel USB Type-C port protector for all computing, docking, and adapter essentials.

The new device is a high-performance USB Type-C connector protection IC providing OVP and ESD protection for the CC and SBU pins. When the IC detects an over-voltage condition on these pins, it shuts down all four conducting paths to shield the system downstream from damage. With four input pins at 24VDC Absolute Maximum Rating, it supplies robust protection against 20V short-to-VBUS over-voltage conditions.

It is designed to be RoHS and green-compliant and is provided in a 16-bump WLCSP package perfect for personal computers, Chromebooks, port dongles, docking stations, and adapters.

“The advantage the HL8261 has over its competitors is that it has an ultra-fast OVP response time (i.e., 30ns). The next best competitor has 70ns. The response time is how fast the switch can shut down when an over-voltage condition occurs. Therefore, it’s a critical performance metric for load switches,” said David Nam, CEO of Halo Microelectronics.
