Souriau – Outdoor power connectors conform to latest UL and IEC standards
Oct 24 2012 - Switches, Relays & Onboard [More Switches, Relays & Onboard Articles]Souriau´s UTL Series offers power connectors for outdoor applications such as architectural and urban lighting, portable power tools and telecom relays. The connectors conform to the latest UL and IEC standards, and can handle currents up to 16A and voltages up to 600V.
The UTL Series is compatible with the latest Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards applicable to luminaires (UL 1598, IEC 60598), telecom relays and portable power tools. Suited to the most demanding climates, it withstands all weather conditions, and in particular UV radiation due to the use of a new moulded polyamide.
The UTL is a high breaking capacity connector with a design making it very difficult to access live parts. Its closing mechanism makes it tamper-proof. It cannot be uncoupled without special tools, which optimizes security when used in public places, says the company.
Closed by a patented latch system which secures the connector, UTL features IP68/69K rated ingress protection. This means that it stays sealed even when the cable is moved under high-pressure cleaning. The cables in the male connector are moulded into the connector, allowing them to be configured straight or at 90 degrees without compromising connection quality or sealing. Even if the cable sheath is cracked, no liquid can enter, as the cables are encapsulated in the molding. Special sealed contacts can also be supplied. With its IPX8 rating, UTL can also be submerged for a week at a depth of 10 meters when coupled, and the sealed-contact version for a week at a depth of 1 metre when uncoupled.
UTL is proven for 500 mating cycles and withstands vibrations according to standard IEC 60512-4 from 10 to 2000 Hz. It can be used at temperatures from -40C to +105C, conforms to smoke and fire control standards, and withstands saline spray for more than 1000 hours. It can be supplied with a square receptacle, in line, or with a locking nut. The 4-pin version is now available, with 6- and 8-pin versions available in 2013, says the company.
