Digi-Key – Automated low-cost solution to the challenge of WIP product traceability (Molex Track-it)

The Molex Track-it traceability pad provides an automated, low-cost solution to the challenge of work in progress (WIP) product traceability in the electronics manufacturing industry.

The Molex Track-it traceability pad functions as a printed circuit board (WIP) identifier in high-volume electronic PCB manufacturing. Measuring only 1.8mm x 2.8mm, the Track-it device is a miniature, metal pad, and laser-etched with a unique 2D Data Matrix symbol, commercially available optical scanners easily read the 2D data matrix code.

Over the course of the user’s PCB manufacturing process, the traceability pad is picked and placed alongside other components onto the application PCB and is solder reflowed. Each PCB thereby gains a unique identification, allowing the traceability data of all other components contained on the populated PCB to be logged against a unique traceability code number. The PCB identifier can then be incorporated into the identification of the final assembled device.
