A new series of surface-mount TransZorb transient voltage suppressors (TVS) in the SlimSMA DO-221AC package, has been unveiled b Vishay. The SMA6F series devices offer a low profile of 0.95mm, high surge capability to 600W at 10/1000μs and 4kW at 8/20μs, and ‘excellent’ clamping capability, says the company.

The TVS devices are 50% thinner than devices in the traditional SMA package yet are footprint-compatible and offer 50% higher surge capability at 10/1000μs. The SMA6F series’ low clamping voltages of 9.2 to 31.4 at 10/1000μs and 13.4 to 36.8 at 8/20μs are 3% to 9% lower than current TVS devices in the SMB package.

With their compact size, SMA6F TVS are designed to protect sensitive electronics against voltage transients induced by inductive load switching and lightning in space-constrained consumer, computer, industrial, and telecommunication applications. Typical end products include hard disks, hot-swap computer and telecom cards, and slim LCD TVs and monitors.

The SMA6F series consists of 16 TVS devices with stand-off voltages from 5V to 20V. The devices offer a temperature range from -55C to +175C, provide ESD capability of 15kV (air) and 8 kV (contact) in accordance to IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4, and meet the MSL Level 1 standard, per -STD-020, LF maximum peak of 260C.

Ideal for automated placement, the TVS devices are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, says the company.
