VPG – Popular foil resistors hailed as the most innovative and useful (VCS1625P and FRSH series)

Vishay Precision Group (VPG) as announced that two of its Vishay Foil Resistors (VFR) products have been named to the 2011 EDN Hot 100, a list of the electronics industry’s most significant products of the year based on innovation, significance, usefulness, and popularity. Honoured in the Components category were the ultra-high-precision FRSH Bulk Metal® Z1-Foil wraparound chip resistors and VCS1625P foil surface-mount current sensing chip resistor.

The FRSH series is based on VFR’s next-generation Z1-Foil technology, which provides an order of magnitude reduction in the Bulk Metal Foil element’s sensitivity to temperature – both external and internal – compared with the classical foil while providing long-term stability in high-temperature environments. FRSH devices offer a TCR of ±1ppm/C from -55C to +125C and ±2.5ppm/C from -55C to +200C, +25C ref. The resistors feature exceptional load-life stability to ±0.05% at +200°C for 2,000 hours at working power, long-term stability to ±0.05% at +225C for 2,000 hours, and tight tolerances to ±0.02%. The devices’ full wraparound terminations ensure safe handling during the manufacturing process and provide stability through multiple thermal cycles. The devices are also capable of withstanding electrostatic discharges at least to 25kV without degradation.

The VCS1625P features a wide resistance range from 0.01ohm to 10ohm, with specific ‘as-required’ values within this range (e.g., 1.234ohm vs. 1ohm) available at no additional cost or delivery time. The resistor features a rise time of 1ns with effectively no ringing, short time overload of <0.005% (50ppm), current noise of 0.01µVrms/V of applied voltage (<-40dB), and a voltage coefficient of <0.1ppm/V. Offering the utmost in electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity, the device withstands ESD to at least 25 kV for increased reliability and offers a non-inductive (<0.08μH), non-capacitive design. The VCS1625P is offered with termination options of tin/lead or lead-free in either gold or tin finishes. It also offers options for post-manufacturing operations (PMO) including additional temperature treatments to extend the operating temperature from +150C to well above +200C. The design of the VCS1625P allows designers to use only a single device to measure larger currents than previously possible by dissipating up to 1W in the same 1625-size package, says the company.
