Vishay – Low-ESR chip capacitors integrate fuses for safety-critical applications (TANTAMOUNT)
Jan 29 2010 - Passives [More Passives Articles]A new series of TANTAMOUNT low-ESR solid tantalum chip capacitors, with built-in fuses, has been introduced by Vishay. Offered in three moulded case sizes, the TF3 series is designed to provide a high level of protection against short circuits in safety-critical applications.
TF3 series devices feature an internal electronic fusing mechanism that activates within 0.1 second with a minimum of 5A applied at +25C. In the event of a failure due to excessive current flow, this fusing prevents damage to circuit components.
With their low ESR down to 0.25ohm at +25C and 100kHz, the capacitors are optimized for high-current applications (>10A) requiring this level of safety, including industrial applications, medical instrumentation, diagnostic and control equipment, high-end computing and data storage, and telecom base stations.
The TF3 devices offer a capacitance range of 0.47µF to 470µF in the C, D, and E case codes. The capacitors provide a high ripple current carrying capability and feature a voltage range from 4V to 50V over an operating temperature range of – 55C to + 125C.
Compatible with high-volume automatic pick-and-place equipment, the TF3 series features standard RoHS-compliant tin terminations, with Sn/Pb terminations available. The devices are 100% surge current tested and meet EIA 535BAAC requirements, says the company.
