Cooper Bussmann – Low-profile inductors offer high power and RoHS compliance
Apr 28 2006 - Passives [More Passives Articles]Next generation cellular phones, digital cameras, PDAs, small LCD displays, and similar products can now be even thinner and lighter, says Cooper Bussmann Electronic Technologies on the introduction of its Coiltronics SD3112, 3114 and 3118 series of low profile, RoHS compliant inductors. Additional applications include LED driver and flash circuits, hard disk drives, backlighting and EL panels, says the company.
The shielded-drum, ferrite core inductors have a footprint of only 3.1mm x 3.1mm and one of the highest power density-to-size ratios of any surface-mount inductor on the market, says the company. For example, the SD3112 offers high power output with inductor values ranging from 1uH at 1.65A to 220uH at 0.113A. Higher current ratings are available in slightly taller profiles of 1.4mm (SD3114), and 1.8mm (SD3118).
An advantage of the ferrite shield is the reduction of EMI effects over unshielded drum core structures. The design is also easier for pick and place machines to recognize and properly orientate the parts, which are more easily detected by vision systems. The configuration is also a stronger mechanical package. Parts are available in tape and reel (4,100 parts per reel) packaging.
