Stackpole – High-energy axial resistors withstand 1kV and 30J
Nov 29 2005 - Passives [More Passives Articles]A highly reliable carbon composition resistor range, capable of handling
overload voltages up to 1000V and energy pulses up to 30J in power ratings
to 1W, is now available from Stackpole Electronics.
The RC Series comprises high-energy resistors which are seen as ideal for
applications requiring a highly stable but small resistor device with the
capability to withstand increased peak voltages and high energy pulses.
These are typically required in applications such as defibrillators,
consumer electronics, automotive ignition systems and industrial power
supplies.
“Design engineers continue to demand smaller components that offer high peak
voltage handling and increased energy ratings,” said Kory Schroeder, product
engineering manager, Stackpole. “The RC Series provides engineers with a
cost-effective resistor device that handles more than six times the pulse
energy and twice the limiting element voltage (1000V) of comparably sized
wirewound resistors.”
The carbon composition construction is ´unique´ in that it allows for very
high resistance values, has excellent pulse handling capability, is
inherently non-inductive and yet does not exhibit catastrophic failures
demonstrated by other film and wirewound resistor types, says the company.
The RC Series is available in power ratings of quarter, half and 1W at 70C,
with a maximum overload voltage of 1000V and pulse handling rating of up to
30 Joules. Resistance values range from 1ohm to 20Mohm with tolerances down
to ±5%. Operating temperature range is from -55C to +105C.
